Featured Client: Dan Chiras, Ph.D

Director, The Evergreen Institute & Prolific Author

Many of you probably already know something about Dan, author of 25+ books related to renewable energy, green/sustainable design & construction and more. Here are just a few of the titles of the books he has written:

Power from the Sun, Power from the Wind, The Solar House, Solar Electricity Basics, Wind Energy Basics, Green Home Improvement, The Natural House, and many more books available at http://www.evergreeninstitute.org/

What you may not be aware of is that Dan's home, located in Gerald, Missouri, burned down about a year ago and that he is now in the process of building a zero-energy replacement home with many green/sustainable features and much more.

Dan is willing to share his expertise and construction scheduling with us so that we can experience the 'design-build' decision process as it happens. Even though Dan will be extremely busy building his new home, he understands the value of conducting Design Charrettes and is willing to let others learn and grow with him.

References-Resources & Help

laptop computer globe image References-Resources and Help  Information is readily available about "how-to" design/build an energy-efficient, green & durable building or other type of sustainable project.  In fact, an avalanche of unsorted information can make it hard to find and extract the specific details a particular project needs.

With this in mind we've invited well-known experts to provide guidance to members & non-members alike.

Welcome to Design Charrette

How can you account for all the various components and programs that could be involved in your commercial project?  Why, by involving a qualified integrated design team and conducting one or more Design Charrettes.

Before we delve into commercial Design Charrettes let's start with the basics.  Commercial buildings don't just appear overnight; there is always a significant amount of planning involved as well as other considerations.

First and foremost are the legal requirements that are encountered when constructing a commercial building.

  • Zoning:  Here is the first question you must be able to answer:  Does the intended building comply with the zoning restrictions/requirements for the land parcel?  This is a 'location-specific' issue that can only be answered by contacting the municipality or governing entity that has jurisdiction over the location in question.  The SBA - US Small Business Administration - provides some basic guidance regarding zoning that can be found here.
  • Land use/parking:  Will there be enough space for the proposed building's tenants to park their vehicles?  Is there mass transportation available?  Some answers can be found here.
  • Building Codes:  ICC-International Code Council
  • Energy Codes:  IECC - International Energy Conservation Code
  • ADA - Handicapped Access Requirements: Accessible Design
  • Homeland Security: Security for Building Occupants and Assets

Next comes the sustainable/green features expected for the building.  One of the most highly visible green organizations that certify sustainable commercial buildings is the US Green Building Council

It is important to locate the green professional that has the correct green credentials for your commercial project.
